After a lot of internal debate, our label decided to pull all of its music from spotify, Sam wrote a piece at the website, it’s here:
https://www.wudrecords.co.uk/news/wud-records-boycott-spotify/
In truth, the biggest arguments were between me (“Get my songs off that PoS now!!”) and Sam (“It’s easier to leave it there than put it back later, it’s great for being discovered, blah blah marketing blah blah”).
Sam finally came around to my way of thinking when we had yet another fine - from Soundrop this time - for somebody adding a song to a playlist and using bots to stream it. There’s no way to stop this.
Personally, there are many, many things about spotify that I find evil to the core. I don’t want my music to be responsible for attracting subscription fees to that platform so the CEO can invest in AI and robots for war. That’s not for me. I don’t want more war. I want less war.
Also, I don’t want to receive royalties for someone else’s work when we pass 1000 streams and they don’t. It’s stealing and I’m not ok with that.
If we all leave spotify, they might change their policies. They would rather have independent music as well as the big labels, and if they can’t have that, they might look again. Until then, they won’t.
Please. Remove your music from spotify today. Cancel your subs. Delete your accounts. Give the mofos the finger. Good riddance. You’ll feel good about it afterwards.
