Hey Chatsong community, I have been producing music for over a decade now with my 10th EP on the way. The reason I love electronic music is because, unlike classical music (yes, I have a bachelors in western music performance and composition) with over 400 years of material to go through, electronic music is relatively new. It somewhat forces you to have a DIY approach to your learning.
However, here’s the thing, it might be easier for someone to understand one concept of production while it might take a lot of time for someone else over the same concept. The only solution is by sharing knowledge so that we save time simply. Now, that doesn’t mean one should forget the DIY approach, it just means one should use knowledge as a guide to their own approach (almost like using a segment of a map given to you by someone else, to add to your own map).
Anyway, a couple of days ago I uploaded a video of me doing a Techno session on my MPC live 2 on the r/mpcusers subreddit. For those of you who don’t know, the MPC is used majorly to produce hip-hop, boom bap, trap and similar music. I have been using it for Techno and House music because i just didn’t know any better when I had purchased it years ago 😛(I would have just bought the Octatrack if I would have know better). The response I got from the sub red was amazing. The video has over 4k views already and a number of people have already reached out to me for lessons.
Turns out the MPC was used as much in dance music as much in Hip-hop when it first came out (old Aphex twin live videos will confirm this, he is using an MPC for beats on the side. Plus, someone told me that the music lineage of the MPC traces back to ghetto house which is one of the earlier branches of American electronic music).
This proves that there is no strict way of learning electronic music. I was able to teach myself on a device that I would have never used if I would have checked online and followed someone’s advice on Youtube.
So yeah, I have decided to give music production lessons and whenever I start, I’ll make sure to give a 50% off for the people of this community (most of you wouldn’t even need production lessons I guess 😛) just because I love this community. I’m still not sure whether to start a patreon or just continue on a discord server as I used to.
Thanks for reading this though. I’m grateful to share this story with you. I wish you the best on your music journey! Happy producing!
