The lyrics, as far as I can tell, describe somebody on an amphetamine comedown - “Tired are the shadows that cross my bed, tired are the shadows as I nod my head…”. The verses, I think, are about events and thoughts before the comedown kicked in.
Musically, there are two versions of this song. The first is called Horizontal Hold, and is somewhat more electronic than this version. If you wish to compare, it appears on the Can of Worms album, here:
After the band reformed in about 1998 with Sammi on vocals, we wanted to have another go at it as we all loved the words and the vibe. So we did a new version of it with guitars instead of the keyboards and sequencer.

I would have to confess that this remains one of my personal favourite DC songs. I love Pete’s lyrics too.
